Down the Rabbit Hole and Into Reality: How a Wood-Sculpted Wonderland Captivated the Imagination
Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" has captivated readers for generations with its whimsical characters and thought-provoking themes. While often visualised through illustrations and film, one particularly enchanting interpretation brought the story to life in a tangible way: a collection of breath taking wooden sculptures at Hotham Park, Bognor Regis. Our case study explores the creation, impact, and enduring appeal of this unique artistic endeavour.

The Vision: Breathing Life into a Literary Classic
The genesis of the "Alice in Wonderland" wooden sculpture collection stemmed from a desire to translate the abstract and ethereal nature of Carroll's story into a three-dimensional form. The artist, Simon was commissioned by Hotham Park Heritage Trust to create a trail of life-sized or larger-than-life figures, meticulously carved from wood, that would embody the essence of the iconic characters and scene.
The challenge was significant. Capturing the nuances of expression, movement and the underlying depth of the narrative required not only exceptional carving skills but a profound understanding of the source material. Simon delved deep into the world of Alice, drawing inspiration from the original text, iconic illustrations by John Tenniel, and personal interpretations of the story's themes.
The Craft: A Symphony of Wood and Imagination
Choosing the right wood was crucial. Simon opted for mainly oak with Lebanese cedar for the Mad Hatters Tea Party table due to both timbers longevity. Each piece underwent a meticulous process, starting with careful selection of the timber and its preparation.
The carving process used a variety of different sized chainsaws to start rough shaping and gradually transitioning to smaller chainsaws together with hand tools for intricate details of each character, paying close attention to the subtle nuances of their personalities.
The beauty of the wood itself – the grain, the knots, the natural imperfections – became an integral part of the artwork. Rather than concealing these features, Simon embraced them, allowing the natural elements to contribute to the character and depth of each sculpture. For example, the swirling grain incorporated into the Mad Hatter's whimsical hat, or the knots of the wood emphasising the seams of the White Rabbits coat.
The Impact: A Wonderland Reborn
The completed collection was unveiled on the 14 April 2017 by Simon, the Mayor of Bognor Regis and Hotham Park Heritage Trust. Its impact extended beyond the art world, attracting a diverse audience drawn to the familiar narrative and the unique artistic interpretation.
